Lou Anne Johnson, a veteran of the Marine Corps, accepts a teaching job in an inner city school in California. Lou Anne doesn't know that her class has gone through four teachers because they are the "hardest" class to teach in the school. According to another teacher in the school, these kids are "bright kids with little or no educational skills. They are kids we call social problems." Lou Anne takes this group of kids, makes them believers, and gets them to learn and show their potential. She ultimately gets them to open up to learning and literature through a combination of bribery and intimidation. Lou Anne finds ways she can connect with her students, who display gifted qualities, and gets them to learn poetry that is typically learned at the college level.
